Atabey: The Costa Rican Cigar Aged for Years in Spain

Atabey does something almost no other brand does: it refuses to tell you what is in the cigar. Selected Tobacco, the company behind it, does not disclose the wrapper, binder or filler on the core line, and its founder has generally denied the persistent speculation that Cuban tobacco is involved. What the company does publish is the process, and the process is the story. Atabey is rolled at Tabacos de Costa Rica, then sent to Spain to age for five to ten years before release. Nelson Alfonso and Selected Tobacco

Atabey is owned and created by Nelson Alfonso Egüed through Selected Tobacco S.A., which he launched in 2012. Alfonso came to cigars from design rather than from agriculture, and he is best known in the industry for packaging work for Habanos S.A., including the Cohiba BHK Behike. The corporate address is in Miami. In the United States the brand is distributed by United Cigars, and at PCA 2026 Selected Tobacco shared the United Cigars booth.

Selected Tobacco's other brands are Byron and Alfonso, and all three share the same factory and the same long ageing philosophy.

Four Atabeys, smallest to largest

Idolos is the short one, Sabios the Robusto, Ritos the Toro, Duendes the torpedo.

The blend nobody will confirm

We will be direct about this, because most retailers are not. Selected Tobacco does not disclose Atabey's blend. No wrapper origin, no binder, no filler breakdown. Speculation about Cuban tobacco has circulated since the brand launched, and Alfonso has generally denied it. Anyone telling you with confidence what is inside an Atabey is guessing.

The one exception is a recent limited release. The Atabey Black Delirios Travel Humidor, from June 2026, was published with an Ecuadorian wrapper, an undisclosed binder, and Dominican and Peruvian filler, in 1,500 boxes of ten.

Costa Rica, then Spain

The factory is Tabacos de Costa Rica. Costa Rica is a rare origin for premium cigars, and the country has no significant tradition of its own in the category, which means everything about the production is a deliberate choice rather than an inheritance.

After rolling, the cigars are sent to Spain and aged there for five to ten years. That is an extraordinary commitment of capital. A cigar sitting in a warehouse for a decade is money not earning, and it is the single clearest explanation for Atabey's price, which runs from around 15 to 40 dollars a cigar at list.

What long ageing does is remove edges. Ammonia dissipates, the tobaccos marry, and the harshness that a young full bodied cigar carries in its first third disappears. It is why an Atabey can be strong without being sharp.

All twelve vitolas

Five of those sizes, Duendes, Spiritus, Místicos, Dioses and Benditos, were added at the 2017 trade show through United Cigar Group and reached retail in 2018, more than doubling the original four size range.

What we notice first-hand

Atabey is the most polarising brand we carry, and the split is almost always about expectation rather than quality. People who buy it expecting to be hit are disappointed. People who buy it expecting refinement are not.

Our recommendation on size is unusual: start with the Spiritus, the 7.5 by 40 lancero. It is not the obvious choice at this price, but a lancero has a far higher ratio of wrapper to filler than a Gordo, which means the years of ageing are more audible. Practical advice at this price. Do not smoke an Atabey outdoors in wind, do not rush it, and do not pair it with anything assertive. A cigar aged for a decade has quiet notes in it that a peated whisky will erase entirely. Coffee or water is a better companion than most spirits.

The bottom line
