Brizard and Co. is a maker of luxury cigar accessories founded by Cyril Brizard, and the range runs wider than most people expect: one, three and five cigar cases and travel humidors, guillotine and V cutters, punches, lighters, desk and travel humidors, single cigar tubes, flasks, valet trays, cufflinks and eyewear stands. The company builds in a Southern California factory, which lets it keep the woodwork, the leatherwork and the metalwork under one roof, and most product pages carry a Made in USA line. Who Brizard and Co. is

Cyril Brizard is the founder and president of the company, and describes himself as a designer of cigar accessories with more than twenty years behind him. Cigar Aficionado has profiled him as the creative founder and wood artisan of the brand, with a particular reputation for working exotic timbers. The company does not publish a founding year, so we do not state one.

What the company does publish is where it builds. Brizard says its Southern California factory gives it strict quality control over woodwork, leatherwork and metalwork, and it sources materials through the Forest Stewardship Council. Cigar Aficionado has described the finishing method as fine sanding followed by teak oil rather than a heavy lacquer coat, which is why a Brizard wood panel reads matte and warm rather than glassy.

That combination, a designer led house that keeps three trades in one building, is the reason the catalog is so wide. A company that outsources leather does not also make a cufflink, a flask and a 150 count humidor.

The materials: exotic wood, leather and exotic skins

Brizard's vocabulary is worth learning, because the collections are named for materials rather than for models. On the wood side the house works Rosewood, Macassar Ebony, Bubinga, Zebrawood, Wenge, Curly Walnut, Bleached Oak and Olive Wood, and Cigar Aficionado has additionally documented Carpathian Elm Burl, Sapele Pommele, Padauk, Pau Ferro Rosewood, Tineo, Imbuia and Lacewood. On the hide side there is genuine caiman alligator in tobacco, cognac and black, black American alligator, ostrich in blue, white, gray, tan, matcha, antique saddle and bruciato, stingray, abalone, and the printed croco, lizard and python patterns. Italian leathers, top grain and full grain, appear throughout, with suede or fleece linings inside. We split those the same way the maker does: leather, ostrich, alligator, stingray and abalone.

Hardware is solid stainless steel with chrome plating and premium nickel plated hinges, and magnetic closures appear across the cases. The one constant is Spanish cedar. It lines the cases, the tubes and the humidors, and it is the material that does the actual work of holding a cigar in condition.

Cigar cases and the Show Band

The Show Band is Brizard's signature case and the piece most people meet the brand through. It is fully laminated with Spanish cedar, takes adjustable cedar dividers, and has a window cut so the cigar's band shows through. The three cigar size is the one that travels, and it is the one we stock in the most colorways.

The first three are the everyday choices at the same price in different skins. The fourth is the Fuente collaboration case, which is a different proposition entirely.

The Havana Traveler

The Havana Traveler is the piece that separates Brizard from most other accessory houses. It is a suede lined compendium rather than a case: a five cigar Spanish cedar interior with four solid cedar dividers, a six ounce flask, and magnetic removable pouches for a lighter and a cutter. There is a second configuration that swaps the flask for a valuables pouch, which is the version most travellers end up preferring.

One note that matters if you are choosing between two: the flask version and the valuables version are the same case. The difference is what fills the second cavity.

Cutters and punches

Brizard's cutting range splits four ways. The V Cutter takes a wedge out of the cap and suits a cigar you want to draw hard on without opening the whole head. The Elite Series 2 is the double blade guillotine, and it is the one that handles a large ring gauge cleanly. The Double Guillotine Series 2 is the slimmer, lower priced guillotine. The Trilogy is the punch, and the Spear version doubles as a draw poker.

One of each, so you can see the difference

Lighters and flame types

Brizard's lighter line is named rather than numbered: Venezia, Sottile, Gatsby, Triple Jet, Eternel and Nano. The Venezia is the one the house is known for, with a flame the brand itself describes as shaped like a Grecian fountain or a fleur de lys. The Sottile is the flat one, two tenths of an inch thick. The Eternel is a double soft flame with a flip cap and a side roller. The Nano is a single torch that stays lit horizontally and upside down.

This is the one place we will steer you deliberately. The Brizard lighters we typically stock run to soft and fountain flames, which are beautiful indoors and at a table, and less useful on a boat deck or a fairway. If you need a torch that holds in wind, look at the lighter range as a whole and consider an El Septimo torch alongside the Brizard piece. A fountain flame and a windproof flame are two different tools, and the honest answer is that you may want both.

Airflow humidors and La Casita de Puros

Brizard builds humidors around two ideas. The Airflow system uses low profile Spanish cedar receptacles with an inlaid aluminium screen, magnet mounted to the lid, and is designed to run on Boveda packs rather than on a sponge or a crystal gel. It comes in 13 to 15, 30 to 40, 60 to 70 and 130 to 150 cigar capacities, with solid Spanish cedar latches inside.

La Casita de Puros is the smaller desk piece, a 12 to 20 count at roughly 8.5 by 7 by 4 inches, with thick Spanish cedar walls, nickel plated hinges, the same Boveda driven Airflow arrangement, a digital hygrometer and a key lock. There is also a cylindrical desk humidor, fully cedar lined, with a gel bean humidifier held under the lid on a magnet and a smooth threaded seal.

The collaborations: Les Chaînes de l'Amour and Le Grand

Brizard's most talked about recent work is the Les Chaînes de l'Amour project with Arturo Fuente and the Italian cabinetmaker Maccarrone. The humidors carried Maccarrone marquetry and Brizard leatherwork in black, blue and red, and the sets included unreleased Fuente Fuente OpusX cigars. The one off auction cabinet, built by Cristian Maccarrone in Italy and then finished in ostrich leather by Brizard's team in California, held 120 Fuente Fuente OpusX 25 Double Coronas and sold for 150,000 dollars.

The second piece is Le Grand, a lighter made with S.T. Dupont alongside Fuente and Maccarrone. Maccarrone supplied burl walnut and tulipwood marquetry on one face, Brizard the ostrich leather on the other, and S.T. Dupont the base. It was the first marquetry in S.T. Dupont's history, priced at 5,700 dollars and limited to 99 pieces.

Brizard and Co. is also Maccarrone's distributor in the United States, which is how the two houses ended up building together in the first place.

What we notice first-hand

Three things we would tell you across the counter.

The first is that the Show Band three is the case most people actually keep. Larger cases get bought and then left at home. A three fits an inside jacket pocket, survives a car door, and does not force you to choose between a Robusto and a Toro because the cedar dividers move.

The second is about the Positano line, the turquoise and African mahogany family. It is the one we reach for when someone is outfitting a boat or a summer house, because turquoise on mahogany looks correct against water in a way that black leather does not. The Positano collection runs across cutters, punches, the Havana Traveler and La Casita de Puros, so a matched set is genuinely possible.

The third is about the wood. Teak oil over sanded exotic timber is a living finish. It looks better at year three than at week one, and it will mark if you leave it in direct sun on a window ledge. Wipe it, do not polish it, and keep it out of the sun.
