Diesel Cigars: A.J. Fernandez, Bourbon Barrels, and Whiskey Row
Diesel started life as a mail-order house brand and turned into one of the better A.J. Fernandez lines in general distribution. Whiskey Row uses tobacco aged in spent Rabbit Hole bourbon barrels, Sherry Cask goes one further with barrels that held thirty-year Pedro Ximénez before the bourbon, and Estelí Puro is a straight Nicaraguan puro from Fernandez's own farms.

It began as a catalog and mail-order brand through Cigars International, which sits inside the same corporate family, and the brand's own materials date it to 2009. In 2017 it was brought into brick-and-mortar retail properly, with a line called Diesel Grind created specifically for tobacconists.
What makes Diesel worth taking seriously is who makes it. A.J. Fernandez blends and produces it at his factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, and the Diesel lines are not a lesser output. The barrel-aging programme in particular is more involved than most brands attempt.
A.J. Fernandez, briefly
Abdel J. Fernandez is a third-generation Cuban tobacco man who built his operation in Estelí, Nicaragua, and became the industry's most in-demand contract blender. He makes cigars under his own name and produces or blends lines for a long list of other brands, including work for Hoyo de Monterrey and Gurkha. His house style is Nicaraguan-forward, generally full-flavoured, and unusually consistent in construction.
Diesel is made at Tabacalera A.J. Fernandez Cigars de Nicaragua in Estelí, and for Estelí Puro the tobacco comes from farms he owns.
Who owns Diesel
Diesel is a Scandinavian Tobacco Group brand and sits at Forged Cigar Company. It has been there since Forged was created in February 2021, as one of the five founding brands alongside La Gloria Cubana, Bolivar, Partagas and Chillin' Moose.
The 2 February 2026 STG reshuffle did not move Diesel. That reshuffle brought Cohiba, Punch and Havana Honeys into Forged, and sent Partagas, Room101 and Don Tomas out to General Cigar Company.

How the barrel aging actually works
Plenty of brands put a spirit name on a band. Fewer do anything to the tobacco. Here is what happens with Diesel.
Rabbit Hole Distilling in Louisville sent spent bourbon barrels to A.J. Fernandez's factory in 2016. A spent barrel still holds a considerable amount of liquid in the wood itself, and the charred inner surface carries vanillin, lactones and caramelised wood sugars from the toasting. San Andrés leaves were packed into those barrels in a specific configuration, and the air inside was controlled and checked at intervals so the leaf took on flavour evenly rather than the outer leaves absorbing everything.
The result is a binder that contributes sweetness and a vanilla-and-oak character from inside the cigar rather than on the outside. That is a deliberate choice: putting the flavoured leaf in the binder position means it reaches you through the whole draw rather than only through contact with the lips, and it avoids the artificial edge that infused wrappers can carry.

The casks in question held Pedro Ximénez sherry aged thirty years before Rabbit Hole used them to finish its straight bourbon. Only then did the Brazilian Arapiraca binder go in. Pedro Ximénez is the sweetest and darkest of the sherry styles, made from grapes dried in the sun until they are close to raisins, so the residue in that wood is very different from a bourbon barrel alone. The target notes are honey, vanilla and molasses.

Diesel Estelí Puro
Released 1 September 2020, and the plainest cigar in the range in the best sense. No barrels, no gimmick. A Nicaraguan puro in which every leaf comes from Estelí, and specifically from A.J. Fernandez's own farms.

A puro is a cigar in which wrapper, binder and filler all come from one country. This one narrows it further to one valley and one grower's land, which is about as tight a sourcing claim as exists in the business. Sizes are Robusto 5.25 x 54, Toro 6 x 54 and Gigante 6 x 60.

Pennsylvania broadleaf, used on the Unholy Cocktail, is worth a note of its own. It is grown in the Lancaster County area and is thicker and more rustic than Connecticut broadleaf, with a distinctive dark, almost bitter-chocolate edge. Very few brands use it.

Written phonetically it comes out "lahero" or "lejero"; the word is ligero, lee-HEH-roh. The rest of the vocabulary: capa wrapper, capote binder, tripa filler, torcedor roller, vitola size, pilón fermentation stack, entubado and booking for the two main bunching methods.

What we taste, from our own humidor
Whiskey Row Robusto
Cold draw is sweet and unmistakably barrel-influenced: vanilla and oak sitting under the tobacco. It lights into cocoa and black pepper, and around the first inch the sweetness from the San Andrés binder arrives and stays. Cedar and leather through the middle, a dry oak finish. Construction is exactly what you expect from Fernandez: even burn, tight ash, no touch-ups. About seventy minutes.
The barrel character is present without being loud. If you have had infused cigars and disliked them, this is a different thing and worth trying.
Whiskey Row Toro
Same blend with more room. The 6 x 54 lets the middle third stretch out and the pepper settles further back. Ninety minutes.
Sherry Cask Robusto
Sweeter and darker than the standard Whiskey Row, which is what you would expect from a broadleaf wrapper and a sherry-then-bourbon cask binder. Raisin and molasses up front, espresso through the middle, and a honeyed note on the finish that is genuinely distinctive. This is the one we hand people who say cigars are not sweet enough.
Sherry Cask Gigante
At 6 x 58 the wrapper does more of the talking, so the broadleaf sweetness dominates. Rich and slow. After dinner, not before.
Estelí Puro Toro
The palate cleanser of the range and our quiet favourite. No barrel, no sweetness, just Nicaraguan tobacco doing what it does: black pepper, dark earth, a mineral edge from the volcanic soil, leather on the finish. It burns cool for a 54 ring and the ash holds well past an inch. Around eighty-five minutes. If you want to know what Estelí tastes like without anything on top of it, this is the cigar.
Pairing, cutting, storage
Whiskey Row with bourbon, obviously, and it works. Sherry Cask with a Pedro Ximénez or an oloroso if you want to complete the circle, or espresso. Estelí Puro takes rye, black coffee or a peated scotch without losing itself.
Straight guillotine on all of them. The 6 x 58 and 6 x 60 need a wider cutter. See our cutters and lighters. Store at 65 to 70 percent relative humidity, 68 to 70 degrees, in a humidor with dependable humidification. Keep barrel-aged cigars away from strongly aromatic ones in the same box, because the character can migrate over months.
The bottom line
Diesel is better than its origin story suggests. The barrel work on Whiskey Row and Sherry Cask is real process rather than marketing, and it produces something that neither an ordinary maduro nor an infused cigar gets to. Estelí Puro is the counterweight and, for our money, the most honest cigar in the range. All of it is made by A.J. Fernandez in Estelí, and the construction shows it.
