Elie Bleu: French Marquetry Humidors Since 1976

Elie Bleu is the reference point in luxury humidors, and it has held that position by refusing to grow. The house describes itself as a luxury cabinet maker since 1976, and its output is capped at no more than three thousand pieces a year. Each humidor takes four to six months. Our Elie Bleu selection is deliberately small and currently centres on a limited edition made with Oliva.

1976, and the Faubourg Saint Antoine

Elie Bleu was founded in 1976 by Alain Berda, in the Parisian cabinetmaking district around the Faubourg Saint Antoine, which the house describes as the cradle of Parisian cabinetmaking. Laurent Fuchs joined in 1999 and has been Director General since 2000.

The boutique opened in the 8th arrondissement in 1997 and relocated near Boulevard Saint Germain in 2020. The workshop moved out of Paris in 2009, and the house describes it as being at the gates of Paris. In the same year, 2009, Elie Bleu was awarded the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label, the French state's Living Heritage Company designation, which is granted to firms holding rare craft expertise.

The cap on output is the fact worth holding onto. Three thousand pieces a year across humidors, boxes and accessories is a genuinely small number for a house with this reputation, and it is a deliberate constraint rather than a limitation.

Marquetry, element by element

Elie Bleu's marquetry is cut element by element. Each component of the pattern is cut individually and then assembled by hand, which the house compares to a meticulous puzzle. The finishing sequence runs planing, sanding, varnishing to a high gloss, and polishing, and the closures are hand adjusted over days or weeks until the lid seats correctly.

Craftsmen are often trained at the Boulle school in Paris, the institution named for André-Charles Boulle, the cabinetmaker to Louis XIV whose inlay work gave the technique its French pedigree.

The woods and the inlays

The species Elie Bleu names include Royal Ebony, Macassar Ebony, Cocobolo, Indian Rosewood, Rio Rosewood, Walnut, Amboyna Burl and Curly Sycamore. Inlays include mother of pearl, straw and gold, which the house describes as real pieces of goldsmithery, alongside frieze and stone inlay.

Since 2019 the company has partnered with the NAUDET nurseries to plant a tree for every product sold, which for a house working in tropical hardwoods is a substantive rather than decorative commitment.

The collections

Elie Bleu's official collection names are: Flor de Alba, Casa Cubana, Medal, New Medal, Che, Royal Ebony, Gun, Flag, Classic Woods, Specials, Pirate, Fruit, Animals, Masterpiece, Carbon, Shagreen, Zodiac Signs, Straw Marquetry, Artists and Road 66.

Flor de Alba is the best known, and the house describes it as celebrating the decorations of traditional Cuban cigar boxes. It runs in 75, 110, 150 in cabinet form, 200, 300 and 500 cigar capacities. Across the range the capacity bands are 50 and under, 75, 110 to 120, 150, 200, 250 and 300 plus.

A note on names that circulate incorrectly: the collections are Flor de Alba, Classic Woods and Straw Marquetry. Shortened forms such as Alba, Classic or Marqueterie are not the house's own names, and we could find no collection called Jet.

The cigar houses

Elie Bleu builds for the cigar industry as well as for collectors. It produced the humidor for Cohiba's fiftieth anniversary, and it has collaborated with Oliva on several occasions. Its own anniversary piece, The Riches of the World, was a 250 count limited to forty.

Lotus International became the exclusive United States distributor in March 2016.

What we notice first-hand

Elie Bleu is the humidor other humidor makers are measured against, and the reason is the closure rather than the picture on the lid. Anyone can produce marquetry. Hand adjusting a lid to body fit over days until the seal is right, on a piece that will be opened thousands of times, is a different order of work, and it is why an Elie Bleu holds humidity as well as it does with a simple humidification system.

What we would tell you honestly is that we do not carry Elie Bleu in depth. Our selection is one limited edition at a time, and when a piece sells it is not restocked. If you want a specific collection or capacity, call us and we will tell you whether it can be sourced rather than pretend it is on the shelf.

For a comparable level of craft in a house we do carry in depth, look at Maccarrone, which works in the same marquetry tradition from Tuscany, or Brizard and Co. for exotic timber finished in oil rather than varnish.

Elie Bleu is a purchase you make once.
