Arturo Fuente: Four Generations, Chateau de la Fuente and OpusX

Arturo Fuente is the most decorated family in Dominican cigars, and the only house to have put three different cigars at number one on Cigar Aficionado's Cigar of the Year list: the Fuente Fuente OpusX Double Corona in 2005, the Don Carlos Eye of the Shark in 2017, and the Fuente Fuente OpusX Reserva d'Chateau in 2023, which scored 97 points. 1912 to now: four generations

Arturo Fuente was born on 18 November 1887 in Güines, Cuba, and founded the company in 1912. The first factory stood at 813 Francis Street in West Tampa, Florida, in the Ybor City era when Tampa was the centre of American cigar making.

His son Carlos Arturo Fuente, born in 1935, took sole ownership in the mid 1950s. The family's own history gives 1956; trade reporting has given 1958 and a purchase price of one dollar. Either way, what Carlos Sr. inherited was a small operation, and what he left behind when he died in 2016 at the age of 81 was the most respected non Cuban cigar house in the world.

Carlos P. Fuente Jr., known throughout the industry as Carlito, is the third generation and the man who created Fuente Fuente OpusX. The family documents four generations through 2018. That continuity is the whole story: very few cigar companies of this age are still run by the family whose name is on the band.

The factories

Tabacalera A. Fuente in the Dominican Republic is the main factory, based in Santiago with offices in Villa Gonzalez. It is the house that also makes cigars for other brands, most famously Ashton, whose founder Robert Levin partnered with the Fuentes shortly after starting his company.

In 2018 the family added Gran Fabrica de Tabacos La Bella y La Bestia in Estelí, Nicaragua, which extended the operation into the country that now produces more premium cigar leaf than anywhere else. Casa Fuente, the family's Las Vegas lounge in the Forum Shops, closed on 19 October 2025 following the patio smoking restrictions. It is worth stating plainly because a number of sites still list it as open.

Chateau de la Fuente and the Dominican wrapper

Chateau de la Fuente is the family's farm at Bonao in the Dominican Republic, near the village of Caribe, on volcanic soil. Carlito Fuente planted 37 acres of Cuban seed there in the early 1990s to answer a question the industry had settled in the negative: whether the Dominican Republic could grow a wrapper leaf good enough for a top tier cigar.

The answer arrived in November 1995 as Fuente Fuente OpusX, the first cigar with a Dominican wrapper, binder and filler at that level. It ages a minimum of one year in enclosed cabinets before release, and it is rolled in a dedicated room at the factory whose floor tiles are laid to form an X.

Fuente Fuente OpusX, size by size

OpusX is published in fourteen vitolas, and the names are worth knowing because they do not follow the usual Robusto and Toro convention.

Alongside the core line sit Angel's Share, Oro Oscuro, the 20th Anniversary releases and Forbidden X. All are Dominican wrapper, binder and filler.

The rest of the portfolio

Fuente's non OpusX lines are where the Cameroon and Connecticut wrappers live, and where most people actually start.

Don Carlos

African Cameroon wrapper over Dominican binder and filler, with tobaccos aged up to ten years. Eye of the Shark at 5.25 by 52, the Robusto at 5 by 50, and the No. 2 are the sizes to know. The Eye of the Shark was Cigar Aficionado's number one cigar of 2017.

Hemingway

African Cameroon wrapper, with a Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro version in limited release. The figurado shapes are the point: Short Story at 4 by 49, Classic at 7 by 46, Masterpiece at 9 by 52. Compare the shape family in our Perfecto and Petit Bouquet collection.

Añejo

Connecticut Maduro wrapper aged in Cognac barrels over Dominican binder and filler. The No. 77 Shark at 5.875 by 50 rising to a 64 ring gauge at the head is the cult size. If barrel ageing interests you, our maduro cigars collection carries several other barrel and broadleaf expressions.

Gran Reserva and Chateau Fuente

The everyday Fuentes. Gran Reserva runs Cameroon, Connecticut Shade or Ecuadorian Sungrown wrappers over Dominican binder and filler, in Flor Fina 8-5-8 at 6 by 47, Churchill at 7.25 by 48 and Cañones at 8.5 by 52. Chateau Fuente adds the Chateau Fuente 4.5 by 50, the Royal Salute at 7.625 by 54 and the King T Rosado Sungrown at 7 by 49. For lighter wrappers generally, see our Connecticut cigars.

Magnum R, Casa Cuba and Destino al Siglo

Magnum R uses an Ecuadorian Rosado Sungrown wrapper, with the Super 60 at 6 by 60 for anyone who lives in the Gordo range. Casa Cuba takes an Ecuadorian Havana wrapper over Cuban seed Dominican binder and filler. Destino al Siglo uses a Chateau de la Fuente Habano seed wrapper.

The awards

Les Chaînes de l'Amour

Les Chaînes de l'Amour, the Chains of Love, is a collaboration between Arturo Fuente, Brizard and Co. and the Italian cabinetmaker Maccarrone. The humidors combined Maccarrone marquetry with Brizard leatherwork in black, blue and red and included unreleased Fuente Fuente OpusX cigars. The auction cabinet, built in Italy by Cristian Maccarrone and finished in ostrich leather in California, held 120 Fuente Fuente OpusX 25 Double Coronas and sold for 150,000 dollars.

The same group then made Le Grand with S.T. Dupont: marquetry on one face, ostrich leather on the other, limited to 99 pieces at 5,700 dollars, and the first marquetry ever used by S.T. Dupont.

What we notice first-hand

Two things worth saying about buying Fuente rather than reading about it.

The first is allocation. OpusX has been scarce since the day it launched, and that has not changed in thirty years. When we get Double Robustos, Forbidden X or 20th Anniversary Believe, they move. If you want a specific vitola, calling is faster than watching a page.

The second is about rest. A Fuente that has just travelled needs two weeks in a stable box before you judge it, and OpusX in particular reads tight and hot straight out of a shipment. That is not the cigar. That is the trip. Give it time in a proper humidor at a steady humidity, and the spice settles into the cedar sweetness it is supposed to have.

The bottom line

If you are starting with Fuente, start with a Hemingway Short Story or a Gran Reserva and learn what Cameroon tastes like. If you already know the house, Don Carlos is the connoisseur's line and OpusX is the one to hunt. And if you want the whole thing in one object, the Les Chaînes de l'Amour case with three OpusX inside is as complete an introduction as exists.
