San Cristobal Cigars: Ashton, the Garcia Family and Revelation

San Cristobal is the third brand in the Ashton stable, launched in 2007 and made from the start by the García family at My Father Cigars in Estelí, Nicaragua. It sits between the Dominican refinement of Ashton and the darker Mexican wrapped La Aroma de Cuba, and it is the most consistently underpriced of the three. Ashton, the Garcías, and 2007

San Cristobal is owned by Ashton Distributors of Philadelphia, founded in 1985 by Robert Levin, with Sathya Levin as president and chief executive since 2021. The brand launched in 2007 and has been made at My Father Cigars S.A. in Estelí ever since, by the García family. The blend work on the original line is attributed to Don Pepin García.

That is the same factory and the same family behind La Aroma de Cuba, which makes the two brands a genuinely useful pair. Same hands, same Estelí leaf, different wrappers and different intent.

The Revelation line, all four sizes we carry

Two box pressed, two round, one wrapper. This is the cleanest way to learn what shape does to a blend.

The five lines

Note how the wrappers move: Nicaraguan Corojo, Ecuador Connecticut, Ecuadoran Sumatra, Mexican San Andrés Oscuro, Ecuadorian Habano. Five lines, five different wrapper origins, all over Nicaraguan interiors. Compare each against our Connecticut, Habano and maduro collections.

Revelation in detail

Revelation arrived in 2013 and is the line we carry deepest. The wrapper is an Ecuadoran Sumatra taken from the viso priming, meaning the middle of the plant, where the leaf carries body without the raw strength of a top priming.

Two of the sizes, the Prophet and the Legend, are box pressed. Box pressing is not decoration. A pressed cigar has a slightly denser bunch and a flatter burn line, and most people find the draw a touch firmer and the smoke a touch cooler than a round cigar of the same ring gauge. If you have never compared the two directly, buying a Prophet and an Odyssey together is the cheapest experiment in this article.

The Quintessence Churchill

The San Cristobal Quintessence Churchill, a 7 by 49 at a nine dollar list price, placed number three on Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 of 2021 with 95 points, described as medium to full. A 95 point cigar in single digits is rare enough to be the single most useful fact about this brand.

Quintessence uses an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper from the fifth priming over Nicaraguan binder and filler grown on García family farms, and launched in August 2016.

What we notice first-hand

San Cristobal is the brand people buy on a recommendation and then buy again without being asked. It has no marketing story to speak of, no famous face, and no lifestyle campaign. What it has is García construction at a price that undercuts almost everything comparable.

Within Revelation, the Prophet is the one we would put in a first box. The 5 by 54 box press is a genuinely comfortable format, it does not demand ninety minutes, and the pressed shape shows off the Sumatra wrapper. The Odyssey at 5.75 by 60 is the same blend for anyone who prefers a large ring gauge.

The fresh pack sampler is worth mentioning because samplers usually are not. At this price it is cheaper than buying four singles, and it removes the guesswork on size.

The bottom line

Start with the Revelation Prophet. If you like it and want a lighter daytime version, look for Elegancia. If you want the award winner, look for the Quintessence Churchill.
